Elayne,

I just love your comments here on "saying thanks" especially as it relates to children. The power of gratitude is tremendous, no matter what our age or circumstance. Thanks for your thoughts and comments!

Bonni,
Thanks for insightful review. I'll have to watch it. It sounds like it could be a vehicle for discussing "Bucket Lists" and Eulogies/Legacy letters in a group.

Thanks Bonni,
I like that concept of "realistic optimism". It is tricky to maintain the energy of optimism that heals and motivates while working with reality especially with a serious chronic illness or a country that is suffering in so many ways. Having a vision and determination helps. However, reality can be an enemy if it is not apart of the process.
Being present with a grateful and hopeful attitude can be an antedote to fear. In threatening and uncertain times we are so vulnerable to having our hopes deflated by absorbing negative information. History and research can be helpful in telling us what has come before and what to be careful about but it is a challenge to prevent it from distracting our optimism with fears. Each individual with an illness just as each moment in the history of a country is unique and requires optimism in working with the difficult realities to achieve a positive outcome. Guarding our attitudes from cynicism and negativity can be important but challenging.

Linda,

Thank you for your comment. I would like to suggest you keep a kind of record of your physical activity by putting check marks on your calendar. Also, I recommed you write the accumulated number of marks beside each because your recognition of your repeated success or the accumulation of successful experiences enhances your self-efficacy (Bandula, A., 1997) even more. Can you think of any other effective means to help make the daily effort? If so, please post your thoughts here for our audience. Thank you. Hisao Kano

Daniel I'm guessing that you are not familiar with SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder. Many people find that their mood is heavier and their energy is lower during the months when there is less daylight. There are special high intensity lights that are used to try to reverse this pattern.
